View larger. Bring Home Your Own Astromech Droid Celebrate Star Wars 30th Anniversary by inviting this movie-accurate droid into your life. Once the loyal companion to Queen Amdala, this utility droid is programmed to be your devoted helper and friend. Help him get ready to serve you by snapping his steering legs into place and attaching the projector piece to his domed top. You'll need to use a Phillips screwdriver to insert four "AA" batteries and four "D" cell batteries in his side. More than 15-inches tall, this sophisticated R2-D2 model boasts a secret cargo compartment, a unique swing-down utility arm that's also a beverage holder, a removable sensor scope, a working light beam, sound-processing microphones, and an adaptable droid mood-status indicator. Sonar navigational technology and infrared location sensors help make him one the most advanced droids around. Take Advantage of Three Interactive Modes Intergalactic missions will be more fun with a reliable droid at your side. In companion mode, R2-D2 responds to commands like "Go on patrol," "Light Beam," and "Play Message." Star Wars fans are sure to appreciate the accuracy of the messages, which are culled from famous missions he remembers. You can even ask R2 about friends including Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, Darth Vader, and Jabba the Hutt. He has a different reaction to each name based on his "feelings" for the characters. And if you hit R2 on the head, he'll make irritated beeping sounds and try to move away from you. As you get to know your droid, you'll realize that the noises and motions he makes correspond to his "mood." In game mode, R2 responds to more complicated commands. He'll act as a sentry to protect your important stuff, dance to cantina music, spin around, or play light tag. The third mode is the most complex. This command mode lets you give pointed directions that control R2's movements. Tell him to turn left and right or go forward whenever you want, or set a preprogrammed course for him to follow. While R2 responded to simple commands with no problems, we had difficulty getting him to respond reliably to more complex requests. We trust that, like with any voice-operated electronic system, over time it will get easier to produce a wider range of commands that R2 consistently responds to. Until then, his movie-accurate look, the way he responds to simple commands, and the convenient beverage holder make him a fun comrade. What's in the Box Droid body, two steering legs, projector piece, telescope piece with sensory array, and an operation manual. R2-D2 can respond to commands. View larger. The D-Rex 2.0 Interactive Dinosaur is a friend, guardian, and prankster all rolled into one toy. Designed for kids eight years and older, this dinosaur --brought to life with "biomorphic robotics"-- features over 100 sounds and movements. Using a bone-shaped remote,D-Rex responds to an "attack" command by roaring and stalking a victim, and he wags his tail when kids pet the back of his head. D-Rex's level of interaction increases with the ability to memorize and perform a sequence of up to 30 actions. At a Glance Ages: 8+ Requires: 5 "C" (included) 2 "AAA" batteries (not included) Screwdriver for battery installation What We Think Fun factor: Durability: Educational factor: Novelty factor: The Good: Biomorphic robotics enable D-Rex to interact with you like a real pet. The Challenging: Realistic features may frighten youngsters. In a Nutshell: This ultimate pet is trainable, wards off enemies, and comes when you call him. At 14 inches in height, D-Rex features over 100 realistic movements and sounds.View larger. Take command of the prehistoric predator using the bone-shaped remote. View larger. Fearsome Predator or Lovable Pet? Though he wears a collar and stands only 14 inches tall, this D-Rex is still a "fearsome" predator. Kids will be enthralled by his realistic skin, and lifelike movements, which are possible thanks to biomorphic robotics. His fiery orange eyes scan the room, and his neck and tail "muscles" ripple with movement. D-Rex has a personality all his own with over 100 sounds and movements, as well as sensors that respond to light, sound, and touch. Become His Master Using the bone-shaped remote control, kids can program D-Rex to perform a number of actions from up to 25 feet away. Pressing "attack" mode makes D-Rex stand alert, and pressing it a second time sends him on a roaring rampage. In "guard" mode, D-Rex stiffens and scans the room, moving his head from side to side. At the first sound of an intruder, D-Rex will roar to alert you. While D-Rex is an effective guardian, like any pet he has needs of his own. If D-Rex's tail stops wagging, he may want attention. Pet his head and quickly get his tail wagging. Also, to keep his hunger at bay, kids can feed him. His jaws will move up and down, stopping only after he has had his fill. Lifelike Interaction As kids learn to tame D-Rex and keep him happy, they can relate to him much like a real-live pet. In "seek" mode, D-Rex comes when you whistle, and in "prank" mode, he repeats funny sounds. Best of all, an advanced training feature allows kids to teach him a specific sequence of actions that he will then repeat on command. As a power-saving feature, D-Rex takes a "Dino-nap" when not being used. Parents will want to assist with removing the toy's packaging and installing two "AAA" batteries (not included) in the bone remote control. What's in the Box D-Rex Interactive Dinosaur, five "C" batteries, and bone control. (Two "AAA" batteries for the remote control not included.) Advanced, "biomorphic" robotic technology allows D-Rex to function like a real pet. <td></tr></table>
