Bring Home Your Own Astromech Droid
Celebrate Star Wars 30th Anniversary by inviting this movie-accurate droid into your life. Once the loyal companion to Queen Amdala, this utility droid is programmed to be your devoted helper and friend. Help him get ready to serve you by snapping his steering legs into place and attaching the projector piece to his domed top. You'll need to use a Phillips screwdriver to insert four "AA" batteries and four "D" cell batteries in his side.

More than 15-inches tall, this sophisticated R2-D2 model boasts a secret cargo compartment, a unique swing-down utility arm that's also a beverage holder, a removable sensor scope, a working light beam, sound-processing microphones, and an adaptable droid mood-status indicator. Sonar navigational technology and infrared location sensors help make him one the most advanced droids around.

Take Advantage of Three Interactive Modes
Intergalactic missions will be more fun with a reliable droid at your side. In companion mode, R2-D2 responds to commands like "Go on patrol," "Light Beam," and "Play Message." Star Wars fans are sure to appreciate the accuracy of the messages, which are culled from famous missions he remembers.

You can even ask R2 about friends including Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, Darth Vader, and Jabba the Hutt. He has a different reaction to each name based on his "feelings" for the characters. And if you hit R2 on the head, he'll make irritated beeping sounds and try to move away from you. As you get to know your droid, you'll realize that the noises and motions he makes correspond to his "mood."

In game mode, R2 responds to more complicated commands. He'll act as a sentry to protect your important stuff, dance to cantina music, spin around, or play light tag. The third mode is the most complex. This command mode lets you give pointed directions that control R2's movements. Tell him to turn left and right or go forward whenever you want, or set a preprogrammed course for him to follow.

While R2 responded to simple commands with no problems, we had difficulty getting him to respond reliably to more complex requests. We trust that, like with any voice-operated electronic system, over time it will get easier to produce a wider range of commands that R2 consistently responds to. Until then, his movie-accurate look, the way he responds to simple commands, and the convenient beverage holder make him a fun comrade.

This is the one the neighbor kids want to play with when they come over. They are fascinated by it. They really enjoy turning off the lights and letting the robot play light tag with them. I bought it from amazon last year and we've never had a problem with it. I am always afraid the kids will break it but Artoo keeps on plugging and he's still going a year later. It can take a little practice to get the voice commands, but one of my two year old son's first spoken words last year was "hey, Artoo!" Mine never runs into walls or anything. He even handles rough carpet and finds his way around furniture. We got a good deal from Amazon and it was one of the best toys we've had.

This little replica R2-D2 interactive droid is really fun!
There are all sorts of commands for R2 to follow and also some games
I was searching around on YouTube and came across a bunch of videos of this R2-D2
interactive droid and found out there are "easter egg" there like hidden commands that
are not listed in the manual, this is very cool.
The best video was R2-D2 vs the household dog lol.
This is AWESOME it will probably be a sought after collectible in the future.
I'm glad I have one in my possesion!
LOTS OF FUN!!

I ordered this for my 12 year old son for Christmas 2009. He is a huge Star Wars fan and requested this as one of his gifts. I thought it would be a waist of money and be a toy that he would lose interest in after a few days. I was so wrong. It was his favorite gift. We were all amazed by this little robot. It is important to read the instructions and commands. My son has mastered the commands and we all have a blast with R2D2. It is really funny when R2D2 is stubborn and shakes his head no. If there is a lot of background noise he has trouble hearing the commands, but we have not found that to be a big problem.
Works so much better than I thought it would...

After reading the description, I had fairly low hopes for it, but it was a great deal on one of the black friday deals, so I bit the bullet and purchased it. I received it quickly, and put on the pieces that were not initially attached. Those pieces seemed cheap compared to the rest of the well-built unit. I put the batteries in, and turned it on, and tried the list of voice commands. A lot of the time, R2 would beep and shake his head "No". It got very frustrating, so I turned it off and gave up.

This ended up being my fault. I read through the directions the next day (why would I do that initially) and found that I had not activated his moving mechanism - the red light on the front - so he could not move, and refused to do a lot of the commands.

Once that was figured out, R2 became a blast to play with. He understands most of the commands on the first try, with the trick being to pause between some of the words and wait for his acknowledgment with his "yes beep".

Being the geek that I am, I would highly recommend this toy for fans of star wars.
Having another toddler in the house!

I can't remember ever having so much fun with a toy! It's like having another toddler in the house. He'll follow your commands only if you say them correctly in the right order, but his voice recognition is amazing. He will respond to female voices as well as male and this system does not require training, except for the owner. His negative responses sound a little too much like "bastard" for me. Other than that, I enjoy his whistles and tweets immensely. I can't believe his artificial intelligence is at such an enjoyable level for the great price I paid for him. Adding an ability to record half a dozen messages to his repitraTo make him better is to his repertoire.
